Alderney Fly-in 2025

Fly-in pilots and their passengers pose for the cameras at the Friday night ‘Wecome Drinks’ event.

“Thanks for making it yet another fantastic event.  We loved it and are already looking forward to next year.”

Nigel Webb – Guernsey (N101W)

Now in its 32nd year, the annual Alderney Fly-in has always been a favourite destination for pilots and their passenger. This year 27 pilots made it to Alderney for the 2025 Fly-in. They came from the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, and of course Jersey and Guernsey. Unlike last year when adverse weather conditions in the UK and Europe resulted in many cancellations, the weather conditions on Friday and Saturday were near perfect, allowing our visitors, around 65 in total, to enjoy the attractions Alderney has to offer.

From an economic perspective, The annual Alderney Fly-in makes an important contribution to the Island’s economy in the shoulder months. The Fly-in also promotes Alderney as a destination for General Aviation despite the lack of Avgas 100LL at the moment. Speaking to some of the Fly-in pilots, a surprising number visit alderney on a regular basis

Judging by the feedback that we have received so far, everyone had a great time. But, it was the Chair of the Guernsey Aero Club, Emma Le Bretton, who we feel summed up this year’s Alderney Fly-in:

On behalf of Team Le Breton, I would just like to thank you all for the incredible amount of work and for making us feel so welcome at the Fly In this weekend. As ever, we had a fantastic time, met up with some great friends (both old and new) and really enjoyed spending time in your super Island. Already looking forward to next year!”

Gala Dinner guests deep in conversation about matters of mutual interest.

In many ways, the Saturday evening ‘Gala Dinner’ is the highlight of the annual Alderney Fly-in. Again the Blonde Hegehog Team served a delicious three-course meal while guests were entertained by our resident duo, Sheena & Dennis.

Gala Dinner guests pose for the camera with Sheena & Dennis in the background.

One of the highlights of the Gala dinner is the model plane competition, the aim of which is to see who can get their replica fighter plane to fly the furthest distance – when getting it to fly at all is an achievement! This year the competition was won by Al Paton, one of the Air Traffic Controllers at Alderney Airport.

The oldest Fly-in pilot, Leonard Hiley, takes his turn during the model plane competition.
Crashed planes litter the tables after the Model Plane Competition.

nota bene – The model plane competition was particularly significant this year as it was introduced by an active member of the Alderney Flying Club, Richard Ward, who died in April after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. We thank him for all his contributions to the Fly-in.

Finally once the fun and games are over it’s time for the annual prize giving. This year we are grateful to John Milner for agreeing to judge the first five categories (see below), assisted by Alderney Flying Club Chairman, David Earl.

Richard Alberg – Winner of the ‘Best Modern Plane’ category is presented his trophy by Charlotte Dain.

Ralph Burridge Spirit of the Fly-In:

Stefan Auer – Winner of the ‘Ralph Burridge Spirit of the Fly-In’ is presented his trophy by Charlotte Dain.

This year the judges decided that Stefan Auer deserved to be awarded the Ralph Burridge ‘Spirit of the Fly-in’.

Stefan, who is based in Germany, registered to attend the Fly-In back in June, saying that he would be coming in his Cirrus Vision-Jet. This, by all accounts, is a very pleasant way to get from Munich to Alderney flying above the weather at a height of 31,000 feet.

Last week, this plan was scuppered when the nose-wheel collapsed while landing the Vision-Jet. Sadly, this has put the aeroplane out of action for a while. However, rather than miss the Fly-In, Stefan booked himself on a commercial flight to Heathrow, got himself to Goodwood where he laid his hands on a DR400 to get him to Alderney.

The judges believe this shows a level of commitment that deserves to be recognised with the Ralph Burridge Spirit of the Fly-In Trophy.

Avgas 100LL:
Currently, AVGAS 100LL and JET-A1 are not available in Alderney, a situation that is unlikely to change any time soon. In the circumstances, ASG, the Guernsey FBO, has kindly agreed to waive their normal handling fees for for any Fly-in aircraft refuelling in Guernsey over the Fly-in weekend. However, pilots will still need to pay the appropriate landing fee (which ASG collects on behalf of Guernsey Ports).

Pilots planning to refuel in Guernsey, should request clearance to taxi to ASG after landing in Guernsey. They should also make it known to ASG personnel that they are Fly-In participants in order to avoid paying a handling charge.

The current (September) fuel prices in Guernsey are:
JET A-1 – £0.73 litre
AVGAS 100LL – £1.17 litre

Duty Free:
If you plan to refuel in Guernsey, ASG offers good selection of Duty Free items at particularly competitive prices, the savings on which could help offset the landing fee. View a copy of the ASG Order Form to see a list of the spirits, cigarettes, and tobacco ASG have available.

Hard copies of the ASG Order Form will be available from the AFC Meet & Greet Team on arrival and at departure.
